Newborns typically are not going to get "used to" being held in their first weeks of life. I find that nearly every time this is the case, the baby is just gassy. If you have just fed and changed your baby and they are falling asleep in your arms, you may begin and to lay them down on a flat surface only to be surprised when instant cries begin. When a baby gets extremely upset when going from an upright position (vertical or even just elevated) to laying flat (horizontal) 9/10 times they are experiencing gas pains. The pain enhances when laying flat, which is why they are uncomfortable when laid down.
Solution? When in doubt my go to solution is to hold them upright, usually on my chest, and pat their back. Sometimes they get a good burp out and sometimes you think it is not woking because there is no burp, but non the less it is helping move the air bubbles in their belly. Do this for another 5 min or so and that baby should be good to go for a nice long rest laying flat in a bassinet.
love always,
